This week, Baltimore-based dancer and choreographer Lauren Withhart begins teaching the first of her four classes in our FRIDAY CLASS series. Lauren is a wonderfully expressive dancer with a fabulous sense of humor that she brings to her work and her teaching. I’ve enjoyed getting to dance with Lauren over the last few years and I think you will, too! Her bio and class description are below. Lauren will teach on October 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9-10:30am. See you in class!
Lauren Withhart is a dance artist based in the Baltimore/Metro DC area since 2005. Receiving her MFA in Dance Performance and Choreography from the University of Maryland and her BFA in Dance from Florida State University, Lauren is a versatile mover and choreographer known for her unique collaborations which have been presented throughout the east coast. She has performed with VTDance/Vincent Thomas, Gesel Mason Performance Projects, and PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER in addition to being a member of The Collective, a Baltimore-based collaborative modern dance company. Lauren has served as Adjunct Faculty at the Community College of Baltimore County and received a Graduate Teaching Assistantship at University of Maryland.
Class description: Lauren’s class is a fusion of classical training with post-modern exploration. Based on her training in the techniques of Graham and Lewitsky, immersion in somatic practice, and current work in improvisational performance, class contains a formalist approach to preparing the body for full-bodied phrase work. Lauren facilitates deep, individualized exploration of body, weight, and space that allows the dancer to move with precision, efficiency, and ease. (In other words, there will be plies and tendus AND flying, jumping, rolling.)
