Photography Shuffle

The Hand You’re Dealt opens Monday at New Image Gallery on the campus of James Madison University. Dance Exchange Artistic Director Cassie Meador and I came up with the concept for this exhibit of contemporary photographs. Eighteen artist/photographers were dealt a different playing card from a deck and challenged to use it in an image. The results demonstrate a wildly diverse range of approaches to photo process and aesthetics.

Inspired by the story of how Cassie’s great-great grandfather lost a mountain in a poker bet, we’ve instigated The Hand You’re Dealt as a dimension of the Dance Exchange’s How To Lose a Mountain and 500 Miles/500 Stories. We hope to expand the endeavor to include all 52 playing cards and eventually publish a unique custom deck of art cards. Artists participating this first wave are: Jason Anderson, Kevin Borg, Stephen Carroll, Cheyenne Crawford, Dymph DeWilde, Alexis Iammarino, Pat Jarrett, Paul E. Jung, Benita Keller, Michael Lease, Robert L. McDonald, Piet Niederhausen, Daniel Robinson, Nicole Salimbene, Mark Wolfe and Tom Wolff.

The exhibit runs from October 24 to December 9. For hours and location see

Our thanks to the photographers and especially to Rebecca Silberman and Corinne Diop of the JMU Department of Art and Art History for their key roles in bringing the exhibit into being.
