This February, Carolina Barna leads our Takoma Park Moves classes. Caroline first came to Dance Exchange as an intern in the spring of 2012, and we’ve been thrilled to continue to working with her through our Summer Institute last year, and her time in the studio with us as we developed Ground Loss in the fall. We’re looking forward to her series this February–we hope you’ll join us! Caroline’s series kicks off with a free preview class on February 7 from 6:30-7pm (right before Thursday night’s HOME event), and continues on February 14, 21, 28 from 6:30-8pm. $10/per class.
Caroline Barna is a dancer and choreographer based in the Washington, DC area. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance and Media Arts and Design from James Madison University. Originally from Northern Virginia, Caroline’s early dance training focused on ballet and pointe technique. At college she began to explore the rich world of dance and had the opportunity to work with many influential choreographers including Gesel Mason, Daniel Burkholder, Laurie Eisenhower and Kelly Bartnik to name just a few. This past year, Caroline interned with the Dance Exchange, Dance Place and Joe’s Movement Emporium. Caroline currently dances with UpRooted Dance Company under the direction of Keira Hart-Mendoza, and works administratively at BalletNova Center for Dance.
Class description: These classes will explore modern and ballet technique in a playful and open environment. We’ll go back to the basics to discover the intentions of these techniques and find a fresh perspective on our own anatomy. We will also use improvisational scores to build and inhabit imagined landscapes. Classes are influenced by my time spent studying abroad in London with instructors from the Laban Conservatory, as well as the Dance Exchange Summer Institute and many rich experiences in the James Madison University Dance Department.
