FRIDAY CLASS with Christopher K. Morgan

Christopher K. Morgan

Christopher K. Morgan does it all: he runs a successful dance company, Christopher K. Morgan & Artists, is an Artist-in-Residence at American University, directs Dance Omi International Dance Collective, makes lush dance works for stages and alternative spaces,  and creates events that give opportunities to other artists in the DC area, like his Dance and Dessert series. But the really exceptional thing about Christopher is that he does all of it with excellence, and with a real desire to create community among artists and audiences. We’re so excited to have this friend and DX alum teaching four classes at Dance Exchange this spring.

Christopher will teach class at Dance Exchange on March 1, 8, April 19, 26. Class is from 9:30-11:15am and costs $12, or $10 with a class card.

Christopher K. Morgan is Artistic Director of Washington DC area contemporary dance company Christopher K. Morgan & Artists and the Artist in Residence in the Dance Program at American University. Said to be “charming and poignant” by The New York Times, his choreography has been presented in 18 countries on 5 continents. His work stems from a belief in the urgency of live performance in an increasingly isolating, commercial, and digital world.  In 2010 his piece +1/-1, won the Dance Metro DC award for Outstanding New Work.  In April 2011 Dance Magazine profiled him as one of six breakout choreographers in the United States.   He also directs the Dance Omi International Dance Collective, an annual residency for choreographers in New York.  He is the recipient of a 2011 Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award for Choreography and a 2012 and 2013 Individual Artist Grant from the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, and a 2013 Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship. A long time friend of the Dance Exchange, Christopher was a full time company member in 1998-99, and has continued work as an adjunct in several Dance Exchange projects over the years. His company is now partnering with Dance Exchange on new initiatives, including shared performances last fall and this coming June at ADI. www.christopherkmorgan.com

Class Description: Christopher’s diverse dance experiences have all contributed to his technique class that reflects the many skills required of today’s working dancer. A movement vocabulary that incorporates a balletic use of the lower body, intricate gestures and a sinuous use of the spine, he is greatly interested in movement efficiency through the use of clear timing and precise expenditure of momentum. Through a warm-up that incorporates release technique, yoga, the traditions of modern dance and a thoughtful build-up to full bodied virtuosic movement, students are asked to bring their entire selves to the class and express themselves without inhibition.
