Matthew and I met Katie Stehura last summer at Bates Dance Festival, and were immediately impressed with her precise, powerful dancing–so much so that we invited her down from New York to teach in our FRIDAY CLASS series! Katie will teach on Friday, March 22nd from 9:30-11:15am at our studio. Class is $12, or $10 with a class card. See you on Friday!
Katie Stehura is originally from Columbus, Ohio and began her dance training with Tony Calucci as a member of the Collaborative Dance Project. She graduated with a B.F.A. in Dance from The Ohio State University, and for two summers she received funding for dance research in Vienna. Katie’s choreography has since been presented in Ohio, Florida, New Jersey, and New York, and she is now teaching, dancing, and making work in NYC. Katie is currently working with ARTS By The People as a teaching artist, leading dance workshops and residencies, as well as a choreographer, having most recently choreographed and directed an evening length, multimedia production featuring dance, live music, spoken word, and visual art. Since relocating, she has also had the pleasure of working with artists Lisa Race, Larry Keigwin, Kendra Portier, Jenna Riegel, Tara Burns, and Nicole Smith among others.
Class Description: Class is often a treat– a rare chance to get out of our routine and let our body’s container rise to match our overflowing presence. It is for our own personal practice and enjoyment, and together we will embark on a physical journey that will take us through phases of familiarity, risk, and growth. We will start slowly by grounding ourselves and finding our center’s connection to the floor. Continuing to warm ourselves up, we will employ set exercises as dance vitamins and guided improvisation as self cleansing, taking in what we need and letting go of what we don’t. We will challenge our bodies and brains with dynamic tasks and use all of this gathered information to take flight with more momentum and freedom in a final, full-bodied phrase.
