11/3 @ DX: Beyond the Building with NEA and ArtPlace

On Monday, November 3, Senior Advisor John Borstel and Resident Artist Amanda Newman had the opportunity to join ArtPlace America for a convening connected to the National Endowment for the Arts’ “Beyond the Building: Performing Arts and Transforming Place.” This gathering provided a platform for performing arts organizations, advocates, and arts practitioners from around the country to dialogue about what it means to make performance art rooted in the particularities of place and people….What, exactly, is this practice we call creative placemaking? What values are inherent in place-based performance art? Who are the stakeholders? What are the challenges in this work? What are the necessary resources?

In the afternoon, after hours of intense conversation, Amanda and John led the group through a Build-a-Phrase, creating a short dance based on the reflections and discoveries of the day. In place of a musical soundtrack, the group moved to the words of ArtPlace’s newly articulated mission statement, creating a new, embodied understanding of some of the concepts we’d been addressing.
