Dance Exchange to Celebrate Four Decades

Inspiring Change Across Generations, Disciplines, and Communities
Through Dancemaking and Creative Practices

Takoma Park, MD, June 9, 2016 – Dance Exchange, an innovator in exploring the essential questions of our time through dance, celebrates 40 years of dancemaking and creative practices beginning this July.  The anniversary kicks off with a Summer Institute from July 8 – 17, bringing participants from around the world, and a 40th Anniversary Gala Saturday, July 16. Both events will take place in the organization’s Takoma Park home.

This anniversary is an important milestone, marking 40 years since a creative force named Liz Lerman founded the Dance Exchange in 1976 and became a pioneer in the field of the performing arts, renowned for collaboration across generations, disciplines and communities. Dance Exchange’s innovative works have channeled the power of performance as an entry point for engaging dialogue, critical reflection, thought and action.

That innovation continues today under the leadership of Artistic Director Cassie Meador and a team of artists creating projects that explore content as far ranging as nuclear physics, immigration, ecology, prayer and action, aging and the advancement of racial equity. Over these four decades, Dance Exchange has produced more than 250 groundbreaking works, thousands of performances, and innumerable community encounters. As they enter their fifth decade, Dance Exchange remains committed to championing artists and audiences to think beyond the stage and towards the many ways dancemaking can have an impact on our world.

The 40th Anniversary Gala, chaired by Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland Associate Executive Director and Dance Exchange Board member Erica Bondarev Rapach, will feature an evening of inspiring legacy stories, dance, music, delicious food and drink, and will join together Dance Exchange’s artists, alumni, and supporters. The evening will open the door to Dance Exchange’s fifth decade, benefiting Dance Exchange’s artistic programming as well as the renovation of its home studios.
