Offsite/Insight: Stories from the Great Smoky Mountains

IMG_1886

Offsite/Insight: Stories from the Great Smoky Mountains is a site-responsive intergenerational performance project that will unearth stories of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the surrounding region, and the people who have made the park what it is today.

The project brings together Dance Exchange artists, National Park Service park ranger and educators, leaders from the Cherokee community, and artists local to the Great Smoky Mountains region to expand community access and connections with the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Offsite/Insight enhances the Park’s citizen science education initiatives and activates dialogue across cultural and generational experiences, and builds capacities across communities to contend with the complexities that shape or human relationship to the environment.

Through 2017, Dance Exchange will facilitate workshops and a series of dancemaking and outdoor experiences with park staff, visitors, regional residents, and local artists. Led by Executive Artistic Director Cassie Meador, the project will ask:

How has the park shaped the lives of those who visit and live nearby?
How have we shaped and changed the park into what it is today?

The project will culminate with a series of performance engagements in collaboration with a cohort of local artists and community members. All are invited to join in the creation and performance of a dance work that illuminates the past, present, and future of this national treasure.

Clingmans Dome Solar Eclipse Event
Great Smoky Mountains National Park
August 21, 2017

On August 21st, marking the total solar eclipse, the National Park Service will host a viewing and performance event in collaboration with NASA, the National Institute of Aerospace, Southwest Community College, Dance Exchange, and a diverse collection of science and arts leaders. Over 1,300 people will gather at Clingman’s Dome, with thousands of others tuning in online, for this event that celebrates and explores the science, mythology, spirituality and storytelling traditions connected to solar eclipses. Through performance and engagement, Dance Exchange will bring people together to share and reflect on their experiences, and create connections between each other, the park land, and the world around them. This event will be live streamed! Tune in at nasa.gov.

This project is funded by the Imagine Your Parks, a grant initiative from the National Endowment for the Arts created in partnership with the National Park Service.
