Off-site/Insight: Stories from the Great Smoky Mountains is a site-responsive intergenerational performance project that will unearth stories of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the surrounding region, and the people who have made the park what it is today.
This collaborative performance project begins in Asheville, North Carolina, where Dance Exchange is making site visits to connect with local artists and partners in fall 2016. Through 2017, Dance Exchange will facilitate workshops and a series of dancemaking and outdoor experiences with park staff, visitors, regional residents, and local artists. Led by Executive Artistic Director Cassie Meador, the project will ask:
How has the park shaped the lives of those who visit and live nearby?
How have we shaped and changed the park into what it is today?
The project will culminate with a series of performance engagements in collaboration with a cohort of local artists and community members. All are invited to join in the creation and performance of a dance work that illuminates the past, present, and future of this national treasure. More on this work coming soon.
This project is funded by the Imagine Your Parks, a grant initiative from the National Endowment for the Arts created in partnership with the National Park Service.
