The Dance Exchange opens its doors (and studio space!) to local teachers to spread their knowledge and love of dance, community, and the arts to our community. Below are the classes and events currently being offered at Dance Exchange. Please directly contact the teachers or event coordinators listed for more information or to register for their classes.

Classes and Events Hosted at Dance Exchange

Dance for Adults with Deborah Riley (Int. Level Modern)
Tuesdays 6:30 – 8PM – begins January 10, 2017
Drop-in for $18/$150 for 10-week registration
Discover new movement possibilities and a richer movement experience. Grounded in Laban/Bartenieff fundamentals, the class begins with a floor warm up followed by standing exercises and movement phrases. Deborah Riley is a dancer, choreographer, educator and Co-Director of Dance Place in Washington, DC. She’s a certified Laban Movement Analyst and was recently honored with the 2016 Pola Nirenska Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dance ClassKanKouran’s Adult Community Dance Classes
Wednesdays 7:30-9 PM; Saturdays 1-2:30 PM in Studio 1
$15 per class; $12 Students with valid ID; 10 classes for $135 with class card (expires Dec. 21, 2016)
KanKouran offers classes for children, teens and adults in the authentic dance and drumming styles of select West African cultural groups. An aerobic activity, dance classes include a warm-up and breakdown of dance steps, followed by choreographed routines accompanied by the drums.

KanKouran Children’s Community Classes

$12 per class; $80 for Children’s Storytelling/Dance/Drum session

Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu
Schedule at
Instruction of basic form, fundamentals, theory and self defense of the Health and stress reducing arts of Tai Chi Chuan, 5 Element Fist, and 8 Trigram Palm Kung fu systems. These arts, Swordplay and other types of meditative or self protective arts are available via private lessons as well. For a limited time come try a complementary introductory course in the group classes of your choice. Music Together Montgomery

Chakra Dance Co-op
Thursdays 6:45-8 PM in Studio 1
During Chakra Dance classes, we stretch, breathe, and move in free dance form inspired by a vast array of amazing music to the 7 energy forces within us. Each class follows a structure YET each class is different because the Co-op is lead by students from YogaRhythmics, (formerly held at Willow St.) We range in age from young to very young 70 year olds. We welcome drop ins.

Children’s Dance Classes

The main goal of these creative movement/pre-ballet and ballet classes is a fun and positive introduction to dance.

The Sunflower Girlz Dance Yogi Team
Thursdays 5:30-6:30 PM
We are currently recruiting girls ages 6 to 12 to join The Sunflower Girlz dance yoga team. In The Sunflower Girlz dance yoga team we will use beautifully choreographed Vinyasa flows to perform a series of dance routines to a host of beautiful melodies. If your daughter has some flexibility, loves to dance, is serious about being a team player, working hard, is focused and has a strong desire to do something as innovative as dance yoga register TODAY!

The Art & Dance of Isadora Duncan
Tuesdays 7-8PM, May 9-June 13 & Fridays 11 AM – 12PM, May 12-June 16
$90 for six sessions (no drop-ins)

Enroll your child in a dance class that explores the natural world around us, as well as the beauty that resides within us all. Through music and movement, young dancers will establish a sense of harmony with nature as well as a oneness with themselves. Students focus on exploration of emotional intention and discovery of individual and unique means of self-expression. Classes include breath-based movement; stretching; barre work; locomotor skills: graceful walking, running, skipping, waltzing, turning, jumping; Duncan repertory for children; myth-based dances; and improvisation. Classes are offered by Word Dance Theater, Washington DC’s premiere Duncan dance company:

Clothing and Shoes
Please wear whatever is comfortable to move in. We ask everyone to remove their shoes before entering the dance studios, and we provide cubbies outside of the studios for storing your shoes and other belongings.

Take the Red Line to Takoma. Exit the Metro station and continue straight on Carroll Avenue. At the second stop light just past Busboys & Poets, take a left on Maple Avenue. Dance Exchange is half a block down on your right. Come around to the back of the building.

There is a small parking lot behind our building as well as metered parking spots in front of the Dance Exchange studio. You can park along Maple Avenue and in the surrounding neighborhood, but be mindful of the parking restrictions, as you may be ticketed.
