Non-DX Classes and Events

The Dance Exchange opens its doors (and studio space!) to local teachers to spread their knowledge and love of dance, community, and the arts to our community. Below are the classes and events currently being offered at Dance Exchange. Please directly contact the teachers or event coordinators listed for more information or to register for their classes.

Dance Class KanKouran’s Adult Community Dance Classes
Wednesdays 7:30-9 PM; Saturdays 1-2:30 PM in Studio 1
$15 per class; $12 Students with valid ID; 10 classes for $135 with class card (expires Dec. 21, 2016)
KanKouran offers classes for children, teens and adults in the authentic dance and drumming styles of select West African cultural groups. An aerobic activity, dance classes include a warm-up and breakdown of dance steps, followed by choreographed routines accompanied by the drums.

Saturdays, 12pm in Studio 2
$12 per class; $80 for Children’s Storytelling/Dance/Drum session

Sword and Mixed Styles
Sundays: Sword 3-4 PM and Mixed Styles 4-5 PM in Studio 1
$110.00 per month per 1hour session
Sword class – the study Chinese sword (Jian) and broadsword (dao). Various forms taught. Mixed styles moves students between different styles and weapons. Wear comfortable, non-binding clothing and non-marking shoes not worn on the street.

Mixed Martial Arts Styles
Saturdays 3-4 PM and 4-5 PM in Studio 1
$110.00 per month per 1 hour session
The classes on Saturday give everyone the opportunity to pursue the Chinese martial art of their choosing. Wear non- restricting clothing and non-marking shoes that are not worn outdoors.

Xing Yo Chuan
Fridays 6-7 PM in Studio 1

Xing Yi is a Chinese martial art that employs the release of energy explosions called fajing. Xing Yi requires dedication and practice to master. Please call or email to register. Wear comfortable, non restricting clothing and non-marking shoes that are not worn outside.

Bagua Zhang
Fridays 7-8 PM in Studio 1

Bagua is a Chinese martial arts that moves circular and engages spiral energy. It requires patience, practice and perservance to learn. Introductory Taiko Workshop
October 2, 2016 at 5-8 PM in Studio 1
$50
This introduction to Japanese drumming (“taiko”) is a comprehensive overview of the dynamic art form including basic technique (“kihon”), drumming as an ensemble (“kumidaiko”), use of voice (“koe”) and connection of energy (“ki”) – all while having fun beating on large drums with big sticks! This is a very HANDS ON workshop so come prepared for a workout!

Tai Chi Chuan and Kung Fu

Instruction of basic form, fundamentals, theory and self defense of the Health and stress reducing arts of Tai Chi Chuan, 5 Element Fist, and 8 Trigram Palm Kung fu systems. These arts, Swordplay and other types of meditative or self protective arts are available via private lessons as well. For a limited time come try a complementary introductory course in the group classes of your choice. Chakra Dance Co-op

During Chakra Dance classes, we stretch, breathe, and move in free dance form inspired by a vast array of amazing music to the 7 energy forces within us. Each class follows a structure YET each class is different because the Co-op is lead by students from YogaRhythmics, (formerly held at Willow St.) We range in age from young to very young 70 year olds. We welcome drop ins.

Dancing With Poles

Enhance your balance, weight shifting and range of movement through unique ballet warm up and Laban Space Harmony. With the aid of slender wands, balls and other props, connect your body to a full movement experience. About Deborah Riley: Deborah is a dancer, choreographer, educator and Co-Director of Dance Place in Washington, DC. She’s a certified Laban Movement Analyst and was recently honored with the 2016 Pola Nirenska Lifetime Achievement Award.

STUDIO INFORMATION

Clothing and Shoes
Please wear whatever is comfortable to move in. We ask everyone to remove their shoes before entering the dance studios, and we provide cubbies outside of the studios for storing your shoes and other belongings.

Metro
Take the Red Line to Takoma. Exit the Metro station and continue straight on Carroll Avenue. At the second stop light, take a left on Maple Avenue. Dance Exchange is half a block down on your right. Come around to the back of the building.

Parking
There is a small parking lot behind our building as well as metered parking spots in front of the Dance Exchange studio. You can park along Maple Avenue and in the surrounding neighborhood, but be mindful of the parking restrictions, as you may be ticketed.
